THE CALL FROM THE TERRACE – 2023

THE CALL FROM THE TERRACE takes place in the beer garden of an old tavern in a state of ruin. Previously a beloved place of vibrant human encounters, the tavern has been abandoned, forgotten and left to its own fate. Here, time and space are interdependent: the tavern’s physical degradation echoes the erosion of memories of its particular human histories. However, although a ruin, it remains alive. Plant life is taking over its structure and breaking it down. Visitors can immediately sense how time is at work on its walls, floors and ceilings.

Director Marcelino Valiente’s site-specific work for this location invites audiences to watch a performance on the tavern’s terrace from the park nearby. His poetic script recalls the encounters, games and dreams of the tavern’s customers. Spectators become witnesses to the building’s deliquescence, and to its disintegrating structure as a kind of embodiment of the human tragedy of disappearance and forgetting. Using voice, movement, music and video, THE CALL FROM THE TERRACE invites you on a hypnotic journey in which collective memories are unveiled and recombined. Its actors sketch out a history of possibilities, in a site in which the human, the natural and the temporal intersect.

THE CALL FROM THE TERRACE will premiere at Into miracles festival in Dudince, Slovakia, on July 1st 2023.
